PHOENIX (AP) — County officials appointed state Rep. Andrew Sherwood to replace a Democratic state senator from Tempe who resigned to take a new job in Nevada.

The decision Wednesday by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors was made to replace Sen. Ed. Ableser.

The appointment creates a vacancy in the state House.

Sherwood, a Democrat from Tempe, was among three nominees picked by Democratic precinct committee members in the 26th legislative district.
