Arizona educators today are expected to wear #RedforEd to send a defining message to Governor Ducey - increase teacher pay or they too potentially strike, and the Arizona Democratic Party is fully behind them. Today's events follow a 5% pay raise West Virginia teachers received after a nine-day strike that grabbed headlines and dominated coverage across the nation.
Arizona teachers are justified in a potential walkout - as their salaries continue to be among the lowest in the nation. In fact, Governor Doug Ducey has been a cheapskate with Arizona teachers, just last year he only wanted to give them a .4 percent pay increase.
“Arizona Teachers deserve higher wages for their hard work,” said Arizona Democratic Party Executive Director Herschel Fink. “Governor Doug Ducey’s failing grade on education proves he can’t handle Arizona’s biggest education problems. Arizona Democrats are fully behind #RedforEd because Arizona schools deserve more than the meager results and mismanagement from Doug Ducey.”
Just last week, national reports continued to highlight Doug Ducey and the GOP-controlled Legislature’s education failures on Arizona’s education system.
CBS This Morning visited state classrooms and shared the stories of teachers struggling to make ends meet with meager pay while schools are forced to close their doors because of underfunding. U.S. News also showed how Doug Ducey’s failing grade on education has dragged Arizona toward the bottom in its “Best State” rankings.
